Maternity 21, new test for Downs and trisomy 18

There's a new test that can determine if your baby has Downs or trisomy 18 with 99% accuracy. It's called maternity 21 and it's a simple blood test. It's new (within the last 8 months). Spread the word because the other tests (CVS and amino) all have miscarriage risks. The test is $200 and most insurance companies don't cover it. I had the nuchal test which did not show any soft markers for downs, but we are getting the maternity 21 test for peace of mind. Regardless of the outcome, I plan to continue, but knowing will mean that I have more time to research and prepare.

I am scheduled for a blood test & ultrasound for downs. My midwife said it was new and the medical teaching school in our area will be conducting it. I'm lucky my insurance has it covered.

Wow... Thanks for the info. I found out I was pregnant the day after my 38th birthday. I'm nervous & will definitely have the test to set my mind at ease!! Can you have it done at anytime? I'm 6w d1.

The test that I'm referring to is NOT the regular blood test that accompanies the nuchal translucency sono which is conducted around 12 weeks. This is another test that is more thorough and not invasive like the CVS or amnio.

Bumpbec that test sounds amazing. I didn't know that it was available although I heard it was being developed a couple of years ago. Are you in the US? I'm in the UK. I don't know if it's available everywhere, but it sounds great.

My standard Bloodwork which accompanies the nt sono came back with a ratio of 1:10,000 so there's no reason to have the additional Bloodwork (the maternity 21 test). However, I would recommend it for anyone whose ratio is 1:250 or less.

I was told about the test at my NT appointment. I should have my NT results on Monday and I will decide then if I am going to do maternity 21. It is a wonderful option if the NT shows an increased risk of trisomy or downs.

I asked my doc about this test today and he said he doesnt use them since its relatively new and doesnt know much about it. For those of you that have had it, did you get the order from your regular obgyn or a specialist?

I have my high risk appt in 3 weeks I think I will ask them since you would think the doctor would just need to order it for the lab to do.

I had a test done for down but it was via ultrasound. I had to go to a special clinic and they gave me results right away.
