My friend was pregnant at camp Pendleton and had a nurse midwife at the naval hospital. I think you just need to ask the OB people if they have any nurse midwives on staff! Good luck!

While I was in I had the choice of an ob or midwife! Ask the hospital!

Thanks for posting.. Not an option here... Attempting to get a new referral (had to make a sick-call appointment first of course)... So my first prenatal appointment won't be until I'm 12+ weeks! Just trying to stay positive :-/

U can also have a natural birth with an ob just be very stern about what u want! They can't do anything without your consent!

A friend of mine delivered both of her babies with midwife Rebecca brown she has appointments at Miramar and delivers at Balboa Naval hospital. My friend had great experiences with her MW and highly recommends her. I know another military family having a home birth but I'm not sure if they are paying out of pocket or not. I am pretty sure when I was looking for a MW in San Diego that some of them said they would work with tricare, that is if you are interested in homebirth. Good luck :)

They said as long as I fall under low risk I should be able to be seen at Miramar... I'll know more after my initial evaluation.. Couple weeks to go :) thanks for the information and support!

I am seeing a MW at Miramar and I absolutely adore her! Her name is Christina and she is so encouraging and kind. She always asks my opinion before making any suggestions. I hope your experience is as wonderful as mine. Good luck!

@TheMacy- will she be there on the day you deliver? That has been a concern for me... Don't want to get pressured into the un-natural options. Also, my first came quick and I'm scared I won't make it to the medical center

We are PCSing next month to Little Rock but I do believe they are there for the delivery. Another option if they don't is to hire a doula. I've been looking into it since I found out Arkansas doesn't let midwives deliver in the hospital. They really are advocates for you and your baby and can help you stick to your goals in the hospital.

Look up Best Start Birth Center....I believe they take Tricare. I wanted to go there, but I was considered high risk, so ended up at Mary Birch.

I agree with the PP about looking into a birth center. I had my entire pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care covered by the military at a birth center. I had my natural birth two weeks ago and don't know if I could have done it in a hospital! (I know many women do, but that is just me.) I hope you get the birth experience you desire :)

If looking for a doula it can be soooo expensive but there are some trying to get experience who don't charge or charge very little and honestly are sooo extremely attentive. Just a thought : )

I'm a navy wife in San Diego, and although going to a birthing center was not an option (if Balboa has room you don't have any choice but to go there) all my prenatal care h as been with a nurse midwife. Sadly it doesn't sound like there are many natural births at Balboa, but I plan on being informed and assertive about my choices.
