enlarged brain ventricles???

just been told my babys 3rd and 4th ventricles in her brain are enlarged. the doctor couldn't give me any info on why what when or where so I was wondering if anyone else has this? I go to see a specialist on Thursday but it feels like a long way a way :'(

Sorry I don't know anything about this but thought I'd bump for you.

The specialist will obv be able to talk you through what it might mean but can understand the wait must be difficult.x

Hi love, I've just had a look and there's a group called ' tests and checkups', maybe you could post in there? Hope you find answers. Xx

My first son has enlarged ventricals. His measured 10.8 at the 20week scan, I had bloods taken, an amniosentisis, an MRI all came back with no clear reason why the ventricals continued to grow at a fast rate. The drs painted a dark future and even offered termination. My little boy is now 2yrs, he never needed an operation, never had any development issues, and is waiting for an appt as he's VERY VERY clever. My cousin had twins and one had a bleed in the brain at birth which caused enlarged ventricals. He had a shunt fitted shortly after birth and is a lovely happy normal 3yr old. He has to go for regular check ups but is doing fantastic. Don't get too scared by what the internet says.x

edited to add, i was told it was only classed as abnormal if they measured over 10mm. My 2nd sons measured 7.2 at his 20week scan and they wernt concerned by that. fingers crossed they're just being overly careful

thanks so much, I read on the internet that its usually only a concern if they measure over 10mm so if that's the case hopefully the lady who did the scan got it wrong because she wrote they measured 6.8mm an iv been really ill with a migraine the last few days and I didn't no if that could have an effect on my baby aswell x

Yeh fingers crossed that she got it wrong. They didn't pick it up at my 1st 20 week scan, they didn't get a good view of the brain but had guessed at the figures and found a "problem" with the bowel.....when I saw the consultant she said the bowels fine but thers a problem with the brain! As hard as it is to not worry, you have to try. Nothing you do now has any affect on it, so just keep calm and enjoy the pregnancy.

The tests they did on me were for infections that could cause it, the amnio for genetic issues and MRI to see if there was a blockage in any of the valves which cause them to be larger. Let me know how you get on. x

my son didnt have that , but had enlarged kidney . when i reserched it said above 10 mm was abnormal , my sons was 7mm but the hospital had a rule of over 6mm so maybe ur hopsital is the same , i know its a worry and my sons kidney problems are still ongoing but everything is great , the only advice i can give is to write down questions to ask as ur mind goes blank when u meet up with consultant xx

mcmummy, my lo has had a bleed and possible enlarged ventricles....we're waiting on further scans to see if drainage is needed. We're worried something really bad will happen.

@mummyjons I know how scary it is, just don't read to much from the internet. Don't Google pictures either, I scared myself even more. Just make sure you ask the Dr every question you have (even the daft ones). Since this happened with my LO, I've met 3 other babies who have had shunts. They are all happy lovely children. Keep us up to date on how you get on x

everything went perfect today, the measurements they took at the hospital where so different to the ones they took at the previous hospital there's gonna be a big complaint put in from me because they should of got a second opinion before they mentioned anything because the worry has made my blood pressure rocket and made me feel ill aswell as the strain this has probably put on my baby. iv spent over £150 on travel an other expenses today to find out that the lady at the other hospital was a complete idiot, definitly all worth it though! u really don't no what uv got until its about to be snatched from u! I wish u all the luck in the world to u other mummys with poorly babies, doctors can do amazing things and the whole worrying process is normal no matter how many times people say don't worry! its what makes us mums and what makes us stronger for our babies. wish u all the best an I hope u get the best outcomes with your little ones :)
