Scared:1/73 chance my baby will have Down Syndrome

I'm scared and stressed out my wozah. I'm 27 and in great health so I don't get why this may be happening to me. My OB called me yesterday to inform me that of my DS screen test results. She said the ultrasound looked normal but my blood work came back elevated and showed I have a 1 in 73 chance in which my baby will be born with DS. she told me more info but honestly I blacked out because I started crying. Now I have to go for either a CVS or an Amnio in which my boyfriend and I are scared of because of the chance of miscarriage. I'm 13weeks and 4days and we are thrilled for our baby to be arrival in early next year. Has anyone ever had this scare? If so what happened? Did you do the tests...was your baby fine? Am I stressing over nothing?

Fortunately those tests are wrong more than they are right! I too had my results come back abnormal. To keep me sane she did not tell me the numerical chance, and honestly I am glad she.didn't. My US also looked good but I am going for a level 2 US on the 8th to get a better quality picture.

I am to far along to have the cvs so if I opt for anything it would be the amnio. From what I have found, the amnio has the lesser risk of the two. Actually recent studies show the risk for amnio is as low as .06% - .5%. Risk for cvs is 1-2%.

We ttc for 2 yrs, so unless something shows on my US, I will not be getting the amnio. That's my personal choice. It took entirely too much work and bfn's to make this miracle, so even if something shows on the US I still may not have the amnio done.

You have to ask yourself, will the results change how you feel? For me, they won't. I have worked with people with disabilities such as downs, so I know I can handle that. But its not for everyone.

Don't stress yourself out! Its not good for you or that bundle of joy in your belly!

I can't say I am a firm "believer", but my aunt said to me, god only gives special babies to those that can handle it. That has stuck with me since. Why, I have no idea!

Good luck mama, and I will be sure and update you with my results.

I'm so very sorry, it's scary, isn't it? First off: my risk was 1:12, I had an amnio, and it came back fine. Keep in mind, it's just screening, NOT diagnosis. They're just trying to identify who may benefit from additional testing, because it's not appropriate to give everyone amnios... But your risk is really still very low. For every 73 people the genetic counselors give that level of risk to, 72 of them will have perfectly healthy babies. I know you've already heard and understand this, but *remember* it. The odds are so very much in your favor. What has been seen in your blood is MUCH more consistent with a healthy baby than an unhealthy one.

That said, I TOTALLY understand your feeling scared and even devastated at even having to consider a sadly real possibility. Best of luck to you, I hope you get the answers you want, and quickly.

Thank you both for your words of wisdom. I'm just freaking out but trying to stay calm. I go in to the doctor on Monday so discuss further testing etc... I'm trying to stay positive but its so hard. I've been reading online about this and I'm reading more positives than negatives. I hope me and my baby are fine. I will keep you all updated and once again THANKYOU for your positive responses.

I know that anything we say can only help so much, it's natural to be scared when the stakes are so high. I did an awful lot of sobbing, even after the release of finally getting the good news. I hope you get to have that good sob, too. Hang in there.

Honestly your odds are really good. If someone told you that you have 72/73 chance of winning the lottery, I'm sure you'd play. It's far better to know and be prepared. The miscarriage risk is minuscule and there is no way to know if babies who miscarry bc of cvs or amino wld have been healthy anyway. Just stay positive.

My nt scan was normal but my blood result came back with a 1/69 chance of ds. We just had our level 2 ultrasound and our baby boy is perfect. Doc told me that since the ultrasound was clear that reduces our odds by 70%. I was never really worried anyway so we are not doing anymore testing.
Also, keep in mind you dont HAVE to do the cvs or amnio, they have a new test that is 99% accurate called the maternal 21, it's just a blood test so no risk of m/c.

Try not too worry and enjoy your pregnancy.

As I mentioned in my pp, I would update with my results.

Well I had my lvl 2 US and it came back clear. With that and my family history it took my risk from 1/60 to 1/120+! Didn't do the amnio as it just wasn't worth the risk, not for me anyway. We ttc 2 yrs and and don't want to lose my little man over nothing.

Keep the faith and good luck! Its ok to be scared, just be strong too.

just wanted to give you some words of encouragement i just recently had my baby he is 3 Weeks today. when i was 18 Weeks pregnant o got s phone call saying i had an increased risk for trisomy 18(which would be a far worse diagnosis that downs i would carry s baby just to have it die sometime in its first year of life) i was mortified after i looked it up i cried whenever i was awake i was a mess. i couldn't figure out why this was happening to my child. anyway i went for my scan i was told my chances was <1/10 they did my scan not one single marker i was slightly relived the genetic counselor seemed pleased so i said screw the amino i don't want to risk losing my baby besides they said my chances were now> 1/10. fast forward s few days i get another phone call saying that my hemoglobin came back i had sickle cell trait (this would be no issue if I didn't have a test done a few years ago that cleared me of having sickle cell trait and my so also has the trait as well) great now my our baby has a 25% chance of having sickle cell anemia mind you i just had a relative pass away with sickle cell anemia. i couldn't imagine how my pregnancy could get any worse. i tried to stay positive i had some happy times but i would always have this thought inn the back of my head what if. anyway my doctor wanted another growth scan since i had an increased risk for tri 18 so at 33 Weeks i had a scan that would bring more bad news my ds was measuring 2 Weeks behind and would have a low birth weight. now i was a high risk pregnancy by this time i was over being pregnant i just wanted it to all end i wanted to know if my child would be healthy or terminally ill i was losing my mind. i had bi weekly check up an ultra sound every week and nst twice a week. (did i mention i was a ftm) so finally at 36 Wells they tell me he is still growing but we are going to induce because he is still small and he might grow better outside the womb. so during labor i sat on egg cells finally i will know. my tiny but perfectly healthy son made his assistance July 21,2012 @ 3:07pm no tri 18 no sickle cell anemia. please don't spend time worrying you will not enjoy your pregnancy do whatever you need to to ease your mind i wish i got the amnio hopefully all is well with your blessing

i hate the stress that these tests put on expecting mothers...i am almost 39 weeks and at 12 weeks we had an ultrasound that showed and increased nuchal which put us at high risk for downs and increased risk for trisomy 18..words we were not expecting..
it was an agonizing decision but we decided to do the amnio ...and i am so glad we did...the risk is very low..the docs will have there own statistics ..my docs was 1/2000. i did stress a little while on bed rest about miscarriage and things like that.. but doc assured me everything easy fine and she was right...
24hrs later i got the fish results back..clearing us of t21.t18.t13 and also it confirmed the sex of our baby about a week and half later got full results and all is normal...
because we had an increased nuchal we also had scan concentration on her heart ...but every scan after that the news has just got better and better...the thing is they just don't know why some babies that are born healthy have increased nuchals at there 12 week ultrasound ...but i think they should at least have some better initial testing for mums to be without he added stress of making these decisions ....best of luck xxx

My wife is 24 and she had a high HCG level at the begining of the pregnnacy it was at 400,000 and then went down to 350,000. We then had our second blood test done and the doc called and told us we have a 1:17 chance that our baby will have DS. We are both freaking out. Any Advice?

There is a genetic test available- Maternit21-ask you doctor. Is just a blood draw, and gives very accurate results. P. S. call your health insurance and ask if they will cover it- it's an expensive one.

You don't have to have an amino. In fact, you don't have to have any of those tests. Do what you feel you need to do, of course, but just know that.
